I know this Weekly Penguin entry is more than a little oddball, but bare with me here. I just recently went through my user manual stockpile, throwing out useless ones for devices long since thrown away. I came across the user manual for my TV, one I never had need to read – and to my big surprise the "Diagnostics" section featured penguins as the reference picture. But something funny caught my attention. See below;
This is one of those Finnish language jokes that looses its 'oomph' in translation. These two entries refer to white noise static in the picture and image being black and white. Since TV's white noise static is commonly referred to as "lumisade" (snowfall) in Finnish, the manual basically claims that, when watching penguins, there is an issue to resolve if the image is black and white and/or there is snowfall.
I thought I'd never see a day when a picture of penguins isn't the best choice to illustrate something, but I guess this is it.
