Weekly Penguin

Weekly Penguin 246

This week we head for a safari – penguin safari, to be precise. Nigel Marven's Penguin Safari, a penguin documentary series from, who else, Nigel Marven, a fantastic nature documentary presenter who is pretty much the British equivalent for the late Steve Irwin. If you happen to be a sci-fi buff like me, you'll likely know him best for his work in hosting the dinosaur documentary series Walking with Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Park, the latter which takes place in the same fictional universe as the other Impossible Pictures dino-production Primeval.

Anyhow, in Penguin Safari Mr. Marven joins our favourite Antarctic birds during the Antarctic spring. King-, Gentoo- and Macaroni Penguins are the true stars of the show, while their neighbouring seals provide supporting roles. Mr. Marven is an ornithologist and his love for birds shows – and penguins are as adorable as you'd expect.

By the way, the series cover is indeed misleading; this documentary doesn't star Emperor Penguins, nor does it focus on their young. Obviously who-ever was responsible for the cover art didn't know the difference between King and Emperor penguin. Heck, Emperor Penguins are the only creatures on Antartica who breed during the winter, not spring!
