So yes, more penguin movies! There are never enough of those! This one I had honestly forgot it existed until I recently came across a review of it on YouTube. The movie in question is animation maestro Don Bluth's lesser known product The Pebble and the Penguin. The film stars a shy penguin Hubie (voiced by Martin Short) who tries to find the right pebble stone to court his loved one with. Obviously Hubie has competition from the evil penguin Drake (Tim Curry!). And an adventure ensues, as Hubie is separated from the colony, trying to get back home before Drake steals his beloved.
I only had the VHS from the way-back-when, so I immediately went and bought the DVD for re-viewing. Unlike the classic Bluth romps (The Secret of NIMH, Land Before Time) this one hasn't aged as well, but it's still pretty fun. And you can also see it as a some sort of early-alpha-prototype for Happy Feet, though this one is way more cliche-filled, not nearly as dearing and less accurate fact wise. I also dislike some of the more the humanised penguins, especially the hourglass-figured females that look just... freaky.
But any film with penguins is worth a look. Especially if the villain is voiced by Tim Curry.
