Weekly Penguin

Weekly Penguin 306

The world is big, obviously, and there are many, many places named after and dedicated to wonderful things. I'd go as far as to say that if you're a fan of something, there's a town for you! Seriously, places like Batman (Turkey) and Tagap (Malaysia) actually exist!

In this light, the town for me obviously is Penguin, Tasmania, Australia. The area was first called Sulphur Creek, then Penguin Creek and was finally named just Penguin in 1895. This postcard features, as it describes, The Big Penguin statue commemorating Penguin officially becoming a town in 1975.

Obviously, the town is named after their local inhabitants, Fairy Penguins. The postcard was released by Rose Series postcards, based on photography of Joe Winduss. Special thanks to Sue Pirotta, of Penguin, for sending this one!
