Another fun first-of-its-kind feature here on Weekly Penguin arena – penguin headphones! And considering I spend my days sitting with my headphones on while working on penguin-stuff, these are in the right place.
These in-ear headphones come from SilverCrest, a Lidl-exclusive brand of electronics. While they're not necessarily for the borderline audiophiles like myself, they're still a great value proposition. The cute penguin-decorated phones come with three pairs of interchangeable ear-buds (small, medium and large), 120 cm cord (with 3.5mm gold-plated jack) and boasts of having 10mm drivers with 20-20 000 Hz range.
Aside from being absolutely adorable, what's my verdict for them as headphones? I'm perhaps not the best person to judge these, as they are in-ear phones – you know, those ear-plug type things popularized by portable audio devices. While these kind of phones offer the best audio-isolation, I still dislike using them. You see, I wear headphones almost every moment I'm awake and as such I'm into over-ear or on-ear models. The idea of wearing plastic plugs IN my ears for day-in, day-out doesn't sound too pleasant.
However, you're not a heavy head-phone user like me – i.e. only wear them a couple of hours at a time – then yeah, they're good. Not audiophile-good, but miles better than what's typically shipped with portable audio devices.
And in case you were wondering; the headphones I'm using are the oldie-but-goodie Sennheiser HD25-1 II on-ear phones. Thanks to the replacement parts available from Sennheiser, I'm pretty sure I'll keep using them until I find a pair that has both better sound quality AND better passive sound isolation.
