Oh my, Weekly Penguin #700! And not only that – tomorrow, January 20th, is the Penguin Awareness Day! The realisation of this double-whammy didn't occur to be until last week. So I was left scrambling, thinking that 'I need something big for the occasion'. Then it hit me; BIG!
There are several huge penguins in my collection that I haven't been able to feature. See, for years Petja was our sole Weekly Penguin photographer. Petja is a hobbyist photographer and is much better at it than I am. For every shoot, I used to pack a bag 'o penguins with me to his place and we set up a DIY temp studio. This worked great, but it also meant that there were several penguins I wouldn't be dragging all over town – namely the fragile glass / ceramic figurines... and the giant ones.
Now that I have a mini-DIY-studio set-up at my place, that's no longer the excuse, so let's start featuring some big birds!
The first one is what I've coined as The Big Baby, who is in the shared first place when it comes to the biggest penguins in my collection. The reasons for the nickname are obvious; Big Baby is an Emperor Penguin chick and is huge. How huge? Well, here's an attempt at a selfie while holding this birb.
Remember to have an informative and fun Penguin Awareness Day on the 20th, everybody!
