Weekly Penguin

Weekly Penguin 734

As promised, more penguin games – only physical ones this time around!

What you are seeing are the adorable wooden game pieces of the game Yura Yura Penguin by Ryoko Yabuchi. The game is a combination of dexterity and a card game – as the game progresses, you will build a tower-of-an-ice-berg, populated by penguins. You win the game either by clearing your hand of the cards – or being the one with the least cards when the ice berg topples over. Of course there's more to it than that, but that's the basic idea.

It's a darn good party game. It's simple, easy to catch up on and fast to set up. It's also extremely 'feel good' in nature, so if you have friends or kids who are 'sore losers', even they will likely come off of it smiling.

And with game pieces like these, how could they not?

The Box

The original Yura Yura Penguin was funded via a Kickstarter campaign and what you see here is the original 'deluxe' version with the additional pieces, including the tongue-in-cheek polar bear rule set. If you missed the Kickstarter, you can still grab your copy via the creator Ryoko Yabuchi's online store.

Alternatively, Yabuchi has revealed that she has a new, more compact version in the works, dubbed Yura Yura Penguin Mini. It will also be funded a via Kickstarter in the not-too-distant future and you can bet on me being on board again. Board game pun not intended.
