Weekly Penguin 1002

The 1000th penguin sparked several folks to ask me one specific question: how do I store / display them?

So, why not an improptu detour to the House of 1000 Penguins. For obvious privacy reasons I'm not going to do a house tour, but I can show my 'main penguin displays'. I've already showcased my work-station and its Penned Guin decor (as well as its more recent additions), so let's get to the yet-to-be-shown stuff.

The main image is a view of the top of my Collector's Edition / Big Box game shelf. I've reserved the top of this shelf for the bigger and more stable-based figurines and statues. I've featured all of these before.

Main non-plushie collection stored for display into a shelf system.

The main display is based on this old hand-me-down shelf system. It houses all the penguin comics, books, DVDs and tabletop games. The small glass cabinet in the middle houses the more fragile, sensitive or unique collectibles – like the recently-featured Pysanky, the many glass penguins I have and even the Lego penguins. The rest of the shelf space is for the more unsorted bunch that just happens to fit there.

Big penguin plushies posing.

On the side of this, there's the small plushie display table. Currently it houses 'the big boys club'. I semi-frequently 'rotate' which ones are on display here. If you're wondering about the weird lighting, I regularly use this setup to photograph the photoshopped plushies, thus the spotlights.

Not all the penguins are on display, naturally. One full closet is reserved for all the rest. Plushies stored in protective zipper bags, postcards in storage boxes and so on. Smaller trinkets and collectibles – like key chains, utensils and so on – I've stored into a set of utility storage boxes meant for screws and bolts. I've modified a couple so that they can fit longer objects like pens, etc.

The best summary for this is a quote from Mr. Popper's Penguins:

Quote from the movie Mr. Popper's Penguins as a Gif: Your house is full of penguins!
