Weekly Penguin

Weekly Penguin 417

To my amazement, there still was one major penguin-themed motion picture I haven't featured yet; Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted. You might remember that I wasn't too kind to Madagascar 2 for various reasons, but rest assured, Madagascar 3 is better.

The story picks up where Madagascar 2 ended, seeing our animal posse calling quits for their attempt to go back to the wild and attempts to get back to New York and Central Park Zoo. However, travelling through Europe they decide to go undercover in a traveling circus, resulting in a Madagascar-style detour of grand proprtions.

In comparison to the two first films, part III basically dumps away the concept of 'tamed animals returning to nature' motif, instead going for pure, boombastic, over-caffeinated comedy. While this means the film isn't a watered down rehash of the same themes all over again, it also means that what made the first film special is gone. But luckily the film still has the amazing penguin commando team!

And the penguins are, again, the best part of the film and reason enough to see it. By the way, Penguins of Madagascar feature film follows directly from where this one ends, so you might want to see this one just to understand what the heck all these characters are doing in a circus in the first place.

Also; penguins in rainbow-coloured afro wigs. Enough said!
